Language Development
What we can help with
Language therapy supports growth in vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, and the ability to understand and tell stories—laying the groundwork for literacy and academic success.
Signs to Watch For
Limited vocabulary for age.
Short, telegraphic sentences (“Want cookie”)
Struggles to follow multi‐step directions (“Put your shoes on and bring me the red ball”)
Difficulty answering “wh-” questions or retelling a story
** Depending on age appropriate milestones
What Therapy Involves
Modeling & Expansion: Clinician repeats child’s utterance and “expands” it (“You want cookie” → “Yes, you want a chocolate chip cookie”).
Thematic Play: Embedding new words and structures into play routines (e.g., “Let’s go to the grocery store,” “Now we’re at the park.”).
Narrative Building: Picture‐book retells, sequencing cards, story maps to scaffold storytelling.
Interactive Reading: Shared book reading with targeted prompts (“What do you think happens next?”).
